Wiki’s for Staff Development

Posted July 17th, 2007 by mrmoses

I just finished a two day staff development and there’s lots to process. Lots. On the very surface, the thing that I am most pleased with is the use of a wiki for this development and how well the staff took to it:

wiki.odysseyk12.org

I think that many of the teachers that saw it, and most of the staff that used it, see a direct way for them to use a wiki with their classes. I can’t wait to see what they do.

Is this part of what Administrator 2.0 is all about?

There is definitely a lot to process from the meeting, esp. if we want to get to a point where you can really get ALL teachers to buy first buy into online instruction, online communication but leave the mentality that “if they only had more face to face time” then they would be successful. If that was the answer, why are traditional school systems so awful when most of them have face to face time.
I loved seeing the wiki in action and evolve in the 2 days. Did we cover anything that was on the original wiki of things teachers wanted to talk about in this planning retreat? Beside the point, I already have some ideas for my family website based on what we did in our meeting, and can’t wait to really put these into action at the beginning of the school year.

Cory – I’m glad that you were able to get in and play around with the wiki. I think most of what was added to the wiki, under agenda items, was touched in the small group discussions that occurred. There needs to be more focus on many of those items, and I think you’re going to see them come up again and again. I’m hoping that we can use a wiki to create the staff meeting/professional development agendas. That way if there are things that need to get covered and aren’t they can continually be added to our agenda until things happen.

    Glenn,
I already e-mailed you (physically put you through the computer, ya know?) sorry – I already sent you an e-mail about the planning retreat – I thought it was a huge success, but you bring up a good (new) point and that is that the wiki can be used for staff development – teachers can actually post to it about things we should/could discuss in our Friday meetings, good things happening at our school, etc. As the Guinness guys would say – “Brilliant!”
